With U.S. Uncertainty Rising, Why Canada’s Energy Position Matters Here at Home

I mentioned the Montney Formation in my blog, and it occurred to me that not everyone may be familiar with what that actually is

So here’s a simple explanation and why it is so important in this political landscape.

Montney Formation

The Montney Formation is a massive layer of shale rock underground that stretches across northeast B.C. and into Alberta. Inside that rock is a very large supply of natural gas and oil and related products.

When companies drill here, they bring up:

  • Natural gas – the fuel that heats homes and generates electricity.

  • Processing. Condensate - is especially important in Western Canada because it’s used to help move oil through pipelines.

For years, most of our gas was sold within North America.

What’s changed is this:

The gas produced here can now be shipped overseas.

LNG Canada began exporting LNG in June 2025. LNG stands for liquefied natural gas — it’s simply natural gas that has been cooled into liquid form so it can be transported by ship.

The gas travels west through the Coastal GasLink pipeline to Kitimat, where it’s loaded onto ships and sold into global markets.

Why does that matter?

Because instead of relying only on North American buyers, Montney gas now has access to international customers. That creates:

  • Broader demand

  • Longer-term contracts

  • More stable production planning

  • Continued infrastructure investment

  • Better prices on the international market

In simple terms:

The Montney Formation is the resource.
LNG is the global market.
That connection strengthens long-term economic activity in our region.

Fort St. John sits right in the middle of this production area. When drilling, processing, and maintenance continue, that supports employment across many sectors — not just energy, but trades, transportation, retail, and local services.

Understanding this bigger picture helps explain why companies continue investing here — and why the region remains strategically important.

If you ever want to talk about how this connects to the local housing market specifically, I’m always happy to chat.
